MSCDEX definition - computer

(MicroSoft CD-ROM EXtensions) A DOS operating system module that added support for CD-ROM drives. The MSCDEX.EXE file was required on a DOS boot floppy in order to install Windows from the CD-ROM. Starting with Windows 95, MSCDEX was replaced with the CD-ROM File System (see CDFS).
