Macintosh Toolbox

Macintosh Toolbox definition - computer

Software routines, drivers and APIs that performed the graphical user interface functions on all Macintosh models up until the iMac. The original Toolbox was hardware, its functions stored on a ROM chip either soldered to the motherboard or in a socket. From the iMac forward, the Toolbox ROM is loaded from a file on the hard disk. Apple developers also included much of its functionality in the Carbon programming API.
