knowledge worker
People who use their brains, not their brawn, to earn a living. In the IT field, almost everyone is a knowledge worker, including analysts, programmers and operators. Although the latter carries tapes, disks and boxes of paper from one place to another, an operator's job requires more brain power than muscle power.
