internal drive definition - computer

A disk, tape or optical drive that fits inside a drive bay in the computer cabinet. It derives its power from the main power supply. Except for highly specialized applications, all computers come with internal hard disk drives. In addition, most desktop and laptop computers contain an internal CD-ROM or DVD drive. Contrast with external drive.
