A network device that performs a variety of processing functions, including network management, bridging, routing and switching. Contrast with passive hub and active hub. See hub.

Intelligent Hub

Cabletron's earlier MMAC line of hubs is an example of a scalable, flexible intelligent hub, supporting Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ATM and WAN connections. This type of device provided a backbone and management for a heterogeneous network. (Image courtesy of Cabletron Systems, Inc.)
