implantable ID chip definition - computer

A chip that contains a unique number used for identification purposes that is embedded under the skin of animals and humans. In the 1990s, the technology became popular for animals in zoos, but in 2001, the first commercial chip for people was introduced (see VeriChip). See RFID.
