(Generic Top-Level Domain) A top-level domain category on the Internet such as .com, .edu and .net. In 1997, the Internet Ad Hoc Committee (IAHC) suggested seven new gTLDs (.firm, .store, .web, .arts, .rec, .info & .nom) and recommended that .com, .net and .org, which were known as "international TLDs" at that time, be redefined as gTLDs. Except for .info, the additional gTLDs were superseded by a different set in late 2000 (.biz, .info, .name, .pro, .coop and .museum). See Internet domain name.
