forward compatible definition - computer

Refers to hardware or software that is compatible with succeeding versions of the product. Also called "upward compatible." When a product or interface is said to be forward compatible, it is really a statement of intent that future versions of the product will be designed to be backward compatible with this one. See backward compatible.
