EDTV

EDTV definition - computer

(Enhanced Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards with 480 lines of resolution. All EDTV formats are progressive scan (480p) and provide a sharper picture than SDTV (Standard Definition TV), but not as good as HDTV (High Definition TV). EDTV sets have screens with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio (more square) rather than wide screen 16:9.

EDTV Vs. ED
"EDTV" may refer to the format or to a TV set that supports it; however, "ED" refers only to the format. See DTV for all the SD/ED/HD specifications.

EDTV sets upconvert DVD, cable and satellite broadcasts that are transmitted at the standard 480i resolution to the higher 480p resolution. They fill in the missing lines using sophisticated algorithms. See interlace, HDTV and SDTV.
