(COnference on DAta SYstems Languages) An organization founded in 1959 by the U.S. Department of Defense. It evolved into a variety of volunteer committees and ultimately disbanded by the mid-1990s. CODASYL was widely known for its definition of COBOL, but it was also involved with the network database model and the data description language (DDL) for defining database schemas.
