An IETF standard for transmitting IP traffic in an ATM network. IP protocols contain IP addresses that have to be converted into ATM addresses, and Classical IP performs this conversion, as long as the destination is within the same subnet. Classical IP does not support routing between networks. The Classical IP-enabled driver in the end station sends out an ARP request to a Classical IP-enabled ARP server, which returns the ATM address.
