The transmission of non-voice data via cellphone, which is an extra-cost subscription service beyond voice calling. The primary purposes for cellular data are e-mail and the Web. Although not voice, text messaging (SMS) is typically available without a data subscription either for a flat monthly fee or on a per-message basis. See broadband card, SMS and cellular generations.
