byte serving

byte serving definition - computer

Also called "page on demand," it is the ability to retrieve a specific page or set of pages rather than the entire document. For example, if the Web server and browser support byte serving, Acrobat files (PDF files) can be viewed as soon as the first couple of pages have been downloaded. The remainder of the file is retrieved in the background.
