10-foot user interface definition - computer

A user interface for a TV set. The "10 foot" is used to differentiate it from a desktop computer screen that is typically less than two feet from the viewer's eyes. Designed to be used by a handheld remote control, the 10-foot user interface has extra large buttons and menu text that are easily navigated. TV program guides and the Windows Media Center interface are examples of the 10 foot UI.

The 10-Foot UI Setting

A common setting for the 10-foot user interface is a home theater with surround sound. The distance between viewer and TV varies, but is typically 10 feet with a 42" or 46" screen.

DVD playback settings are adjusted from this screen in the Media Center 10-foot user interface in Windows XP. Displayed on a TV set, the large text and dialog fill the entire screen and can be viewed from several feet away.
