Discuss euphony here.

noun

An agreeable or pleasing sound or combination of sounds; a pronunciation of letters, syllables, or words which is pleasant to the ear; the contrary to harshness or cacophony.

[Greek euphonia, from euphonos = harmonious or pleasant to the ear; eu = well, good, and phone = a sound, voice.]

A cacophony is a loud clash of music, or noise, e.g. all the instruments of a symphony orchestra tuning their instruments at the same time, may be a cacophony.
A euphony is a pleasing sound, akin, say, to the music all the instruments make when playing a piece of beautiful music by some composer, e.g. Mozart.

Cacophony also has more letters and syllables than euphony.

Thanks. And, as you pointed out, they have different meanings. I wonder why Minespatch didn’t pick up on that!

You can’t play a cacophonium.

I find that Ravel’s “Pavane for a Princess” or Saint-Sean’s Aviary tend to be euphonic.
