Etymology or definition of “lock and load”, apparently a military term.

Lock and load: The term refers to arming a firearm by inserting an ammunition clip into the magazine well of the weapon, and making sure that the magazine is “locked” into place before attempting to chamber a round of ammunition.

At the rifle range it can be rather embarrassing when the magazine drops out of your weapon, and lands on your foot. And no doubt could have deadly results in combat
