I have just learned these two from the radio, spake by a man whose knowledge I wouldn’t question. In London, the notorious site of Tyburne where over 50,000 were hanged, now called Marble Arch, gave rise to two drink related sayings. ‘One for the road’ and ‘on the wagon’.
The wagon taking the unfortunate wretches for execution, stopped at a pub somewhere along what is now Oxford Street, they were taken down and given a free drink at the hostelry. This gave rise to having ‘one for the road’.
As they were put back onto the wagon and taken to their fate, they were said to be ‘on the wagon’ and would drink no more.
Gruesome but interesting.
