I have just learned these two from the radio, spake by a man whose knowledge I wouldn’t question. In London, the notorious site of Tyburne where over 50,000 were hanged, now called Marble Arch, gave rise to two drink related sayings. ‘One for the road’ and ‘on the wagon’.

The wagon taking the unfortunate wretches for execution, stopped at a pub somewhere along what is now Oxford Street, they were taken down and given a free drink at the hostelry. This gave rise to having ‘one for the road’.
As they were put back onto the wagon and taken to their fate, they were said to be ‘on the wagon’ and would drink no more.

Gruesome but interesting.

That really is interesting.  I am forwarding that to my friend the alcohol counselor. I take it you live in London?  I love that city.

Just outside the Metropolis proper but in the greater catchment area. Luckily most of the interesting buildings still stand but the true British spirit/heart has been wrenched from the corpus by this Labour government. Over 3,000 new laws to tax the citizen, we don’t mind you breaking the law as long as you pay us. More snooping on the citizens, we have more CCTVs than anywhere on the planet, I would not be surprised if they have one in my toilet bowl! LOL Now they want to check our use of the Internet. Oh they monitor all emails already.
George Orwell, great writer, crap timing.

Was the last meal before the guillotine á la carte?

I still love the line from the Carry On movie where the aristocrat, on receipt of a last-minute reprieve, asked the messenger to “drop it in the basket and I’ll read it later”.

‘One for the road’ and ‘on the wagon’

I would want one for the wagon, too.

Maybe that is why the taverns, bars and pubs are full to overflowing, attempting to ‘cope’.
