HALLEY’S SONNET
I’ve watched the wonders of the world arise and fall
And many a king’s domain erode to dust
I heard the dinosaur’s last call
When something else from space fell to Earth’s crust
I saw great Edmond Halley breathe his last
While missing my return by sixteen years
Some say I was too slow, or he too fast
But comets have no hearts and shed no tears
For those who missed the light that I have shed
In former years when I have circled near
There is yet one more chance before you’re dead
Two thousand sixty one will be your year
I am the greatest gift God gave to men
A little tail to chase until the end
