He answers questions daily, many of which are rather challenging, so he may feel exhausted by the end of the day.

Here, the final main clause “so he may…” relates to the relative clause immediately preceding it.

The questions are challenging Therefore/So he may feel tired…

Can this occur? An independent clause relates to the dependent clause, rather than the first main clause.

I’m sure it is o.k. but perhaps not elegant??

The sentence is fine” two independent clauses (he answers questions daily…, so he may feel exhausted by the end of the day). The unrestrictive independent dependent clause in the middle simply causes the rest of the sentence to make more sense.

I assue you just made a typo: dependent.

Yes, the non-restrictive dependent clause is what makes the final main clause make sense. I just thought it may not be the most elegant way of writing: I thought the first main clause should be what makes the second main clause make sense, not a non-restrictive clause.

Yes, it was a typo. However, I don’t think this sentence is in danger of elegance, one way or another.

Can caroliners write elegantly?? Or just snidely, except to tree huggers?
