I saw it last night, so I was interested to see what others thought.

Not yet, have to wait for it to come out on DVD, movies are too expensive to go to when a person is on ‘fixed income”. Glad you enjoyed it.

I agree. Movies charge too much!

If the film really appeals, then the experience justifies spending the additional money, I feel.

I did enjoy the film, though I would’ve liked it to continue. I may rub-up a few people saying this, but witnessing a film not set in the U.S. pleased me; it was quite refreshing.

Along with this unique setting, I liked the aliens as they showed intelligence—unlike the aliens in the majority of films—by resisting their urge to kill to ensure their survival; they lacked the weaponary and numbers to come close to winning. Instead, they tried outwitting us. I won’t tell you anymore.

Watch it! It’s worth it. Don’t take a female as it’s quite gory.

So where was the film set?  Where was it filmed as well?
I thought district 9 was akin to area 51 which is in the US.
I won’t take a female. They have the chick flicks, Ellen, Oprah, and Lifetime TV.
I like it when the alien is intellingent and beneficent. I remember the classic cult film: “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. Have you seen it? You Might enjoy it.

To my knowledge it was set and filmed in the same place: a slum above johannesburg.

It is a sci-fi, so parts of it are slightly unrealstic but nothing over the top.

If you have ever seen the movie Cloverfield, it is like that in that they both take a first person approach; that is, you watch the film through the main character, so questions and answers are not given, to give the film a sense of realism, and it truly worked!

No, I haven’t seen it, but I may now. Video Ezy is my local video store, where I spend a great deal of tme.

It’s old, but splendid. Gave a generation a new view of aliens.  Use of music to communicate. Marvelous.
Have District 9 on my list now that we’ve discussed it.

I appreciate good recommendations.
I declaim much to do with grammar. Tired of it after too much teaching.  Bores me silly anymore, as I’ve explained, but I love to read: read three novels last week.  Sci Fi and Fantasy are among my
favorites.  Love Robin Hood style things as well, drama, mysteries, etc.  Spend lots of time at my video store as well, so thanks for the info.  Where do you live? Never heard of Video Ezy.

(Our notification of postings is not working here: so we are sort of in a holding patern, unless we look on the forums to see who posted last and where.)

Video Ezy is a franchise here in New Zealand. I’d say that it’s the biggest, and most popular of them also. It sells videos, dvds, blue-ray dvds, playstation and x-box games, and snacks.

I’m sure they are tiny and insignificant compared to ones in the US though.

I enjoy reading also. But I have to say there is little better than a great film. Have you watched Lord of the Rings before? What about The Shinning?

I am really happy to make your acquaintance.  I had not a clue you were in New Zealand. KIA ORA.

Yes, I’ve seen the Shining. I like his work, and there are others of the same genre: Dean Koontz, and John Saul.
I dislike horror, but these have some really good plots and themes, and really are more sci fi than horror.  We have a sci fi channel which recently changed its name to SyFy.  It has some good shows.
But also some pathetic one.

As for video stores, they are hurting now.  Blockbuster is the largest, as far as I know.  TV can now get what they call “On Demand” and almost any movie is available.  Netflix mails movies to you, and
you mail them back with their catalog on line: not going to a store is a big deal for some.  My Blockbuster store is only a few blocks away, so I don’t mind, and it has all the things you mentioned.

Yes I did see Lord of the Rings, twice actually, and have the DVD.  I read the books back in High School, which was some time ago, and fell in love with them, and then when they announced that
Peter Jackson was going to make the films, I was ecstatic.  Elijah Wood was fabulous, Sean Astin as well.  All the parts were amazing. The woods of the Elves were just as I pictured them when
reading the books, which I do every so often just because I love the story. When you read a book and picture things in your mind, and then have them appear on screen as you imagined them, it is
so rewarding.  I truly love those movies.

(we are still having trouble posting and receiving notification here, saparris and I both, so there is delay in finding posts from you and others, as we have to search the forum)

Kia Ora.

We have Blockbuster here also. Perhaps this our biggest chain actually. We too have “On Deman” and the like, but I do believe it is less popular than video stores, perhaps because the range of videos available is too small. I’m sure it’ll become more popular with time.

The shinning was a classic. I also am not a big fan of horrors, especially when they have half-witted characters who corner themselves from the killer, or even better, who trip over nothing to let the painfully slow killer close in for the kill. Horrors all scare you. The plots are all the same. The characters are all dumb. I only like them when they have a good twist.

Lord of the Rings is a favorite of mine. Peter Jackson is a genuis, who was suprisingly not knighted for his efforts. The orcs and goblins and the other ferocious enemy looked great. And the majesty of the castels was incredible since they were created by computer. And the plot was brilliant considering Jackson had to compact a huge amount into three films.

I also love reading a book and then watching a similar depiction of the book by a director.

I agree totally with your concept of horror movies. You see one you’ve seen them all.
I am still absorbing the information contained on each DVD about how they made the movies, using children for hobbits when next to ‘men’ etc.  All the sketchs, hardcopy,
etc.  How they made the links and chain mail by hand.  The Tower of Isengard, magnificent. Rivendell of the Elves: scintillating.
If anyone deserves Knighthood for a movie it is Jackson, just for “rings’ alone.
I love reading a book and then watching a similar depiction by a director as well, especially when I have pictured it so similarly in my own head as Jackson did.

I enjoyed reading the Harry Potter books and then watching the films as well. The films are quite diffferent from the books, but I enjoy making the comparisons.

And I’ve heard that Peter Jackson is making a movie out of The Hobbit. If there is anyone who can maintain their reputation of excellence, it is he. I’m looking foward to it.

Books are too long to get everything into them, so they had to make some considerations there, of course. Actually Jackson is making the Hobbit into two movies. Should be jam-packed with
material, since the book is so short.

Oh really. Do you know when they are both coming out? I suppose not for a while, since he produced District 9, which would have taken up a lot of his time.

I have not read the Hobbit, though I should have; it is officially on my to-do list. Would be good to read it before I see it on the big screen.

Judging by you appreciation for Jackson, I assume you will splash out the extra few bucks to watch The Hobbit movies at the movies… If you can’t afford it on your ‘fixed income,’ then I’ll invite you to my house to watch it. We can eat popcorn. But I have a feeling the flights may be nearly as expensive as the cinemas, unless you travel cattle class, of course.
