The handling errors prevent us from scoring.

The handling errors prevent us scoring.

The handling errors prevent our from scoring.

The handling errors prevent our scoring.

I feel like the preposition doesn’t NEED to be there. But when it is there, do I need the possessive to go with the gerund? I’m almost certain I don’t. But can you explain, please

Thanks

The handling errors prevent us from scoring is correct because us is the object.

The handling errors prevent our scoring
is correct because scoring is the object.

The our is there to indicate who was prevented from scoring (we).

Compare this to The curfew might prevent more bloodshed (not our bloodshed, though).

This forum should be re-titled Eddioms.

Some day, someone is going to string together all these sentences and come up with the Great New Zealand Novel - “Land of the Lone Writer’s Crowd”.  The punctuator will get higher billing than the author.

But at least he’s got it right about yesterday’s Tri-nations game.

Yeah, the game was dreadful. Often, if the AB’s lose, it is due to their own faults, or due to outside factors the AB’s have no control over. This may sound extremely conceited, but if you look at our track record, you will see: we win a large proportion of our games, and when we lose, the ref misses a foward pass (world cup), the Ab’s gain food poisioning (world cup), the refereee seems biased (last world cup).

I know this sounds like I’m a poor sport, but I don’t care. If this is how I feel, then why would I lie to myself just so you don’t think this of me?

Regarding the new title for the forum, I think this could be a good idea. But I must say, you only become wiser by asking, not by passing comment. smile
