Discuss proclivity here.

Proclivity

noun

1) Inclination, bent; natural disposition or propensity; tendency.

2) Readiness; facility or quickness of learning.

[Latin proclivitas, from proclivis = proclive (q.v.).]

Spelled ‘pro..”  Hear this word-  definitely sounds like ‘pro…’  But the pronunciation guide uses an ‘e’ with an inverted v over it.  I am unable to find this symbol on your site.  Therefore three questions:  1 Why not pro on the pronunciatiion guide?  What does the symbol given over the ‘e’ mean?  3. Where is this found on your site?

The symbol that look like an upside down e and called a schwa (pronouned shwah).

The sound is very similar to a short u and is used in unaccented syllables. Some examples are little, sofa, and about.

Thank you.  Still unclear to me - newbie.  The ‘e’ is not upside down.  It is ‘e’ with ^ over it.  What does this mean and how could I have found the meaning of this ‘e’ + ^ myself.  Still when I listen to the word pronounced I hear ‘pro’ as in pronounced.

Sorry. I misread your question. The upside down v is called a caret. The sound of the first syllable of proclivity is still very much like a short u or a schwa, especially in the UK. Go the the link below and click on the small arrows in the US and the UK. The latter is the sound you’re looking for.

Only women deliver.
Nothing too funny ever here here, so I’m not worrying about delivery of rip snorting belly laughs.

I, sir, am no woman. But I have the proclivity to make you laugh. Just have to find the right retort.

As they say out in ‘redneck-ville”:  “rots of ruck”!

And I ain’t interested in your proclivities and/or cleavages, no matter where you retort them.
