ACB and I were discussing the adjective plus modifier phrase in the terminal position the other day.

We came to the conclusion that a ‘that’ clause following the adjective must be adverbial. So would this one be adverbial? Or do you disagree with us?

He returned home early the next day, concerned that his wife may be cheating on him.

This here cannot be a participle phrase as there is no clear agent that could function as the subject. Correct me if you disagree.

And is this how you would write the sentence above? Or would you personally write it as two separate sentences? He was concerned, so he returned home ealry the next day.

Thanks

Hi!

I think I will write it the same as you did.

“He returned home early the next day, concerned that his wife may be cheating on him.”

Guys, please correct us if we’re wrong.

Thanks =)

He returned home early the next day, concerned that his wife may be cheating on him.

‘May’ should be changed to the past tense ‘might’.  Otherwise the sentence is fine.  The words after ‘concerned’ are an adverbial clause; they add information about his being concerned.
