It does not work as it used to

Hello!

My first post.  I have been using YD with wildcards before, with great success.  Now, when I use YD, wildcard use does not work, and I get hits looking like Google hits, not terms/words.

What might I be missing?

Regards,

Hans L

I’m afraid I cannot help with your situation, am quite new to computers, but I do want to welcome you
to your first posting, and please, contribute often. We always need new expressions and ideas.

Thank you, Luke, for your welcome.

I hope someone has a suggestion for what is wrong with my YD.

You’re welcome.  I don’t even know what you are referring to by “YD” .  But give it time, someone will reply.
Be a frequent viewer, and reply.  We do like new persons here, gives the forum/agora a fresh place to see
new things.  Reply in some other thread, like Miscellaneous and state your problem again, better chance
for someone else to see it.

Okay, I was not sure where to ask.  “YD” stand for, ready now, “Your Dictionary” grin.  I will post in Miscellaneous!

Luke, what do you mean by asking in a another tread?  That is not exactly the way forums work, is it?  There is usually a subforum for questions and there you post a new thread unless an existing thread is dedicated to your issue.

Hi Hans,

We are working on getting this fixed as fast as we can.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

OK, smartie, YD stands for Your Dictionary.  Not too bright on the surface, I.
By posting else where I just meant go to another thread and ask the same thing.
But you caught our chief and most High Seneschal and revered GOG herself’s attention.
Vikki, the all fixing.
And look! you’re up to five posts already !!!

Don’t feel bad, Luke – I have done the same thing – what is RIP? FYI? Etc. grin

And I had to look this up:

seneschal definition
sen·eschal (sen′ə s̸həl)
noun
a steward or major-domo in the household of a medieval noble

Now, do wildcards work for you?  If they do, give me a working example and the URL where I can test it.

Thank you!

I’m glad you looked up ‘seneschal’, its a word I like, the sound especially.  Fits Vikki to a tee !

Now, wildcards?  That is another term I am not familiar with, especially when dealing with computers. I’ve only been using a computer for less than two years.
You mentioned wildcards in your first posting.  As they say in French: qu’est que c’est??? (What is it?)

Wildards:  You search for *ist, and you get all words that ends with “ist”, like specialist, list, etc.

You search for sh??e, and you get hits on shale, shore, share, etc.

As you can see, the star (*) stands for any number of characters and the question mark (?) stands for any one character.

Hans L

Vikki
are you gloating?????
As long as I am playing (not playing really) stupid, where do you do this search?  For lack of brain, I’ll ask, I have no shame?  Up in the Search Space at top of page?????????

Hi Luke,

Gloating? Nope…but you all made me smile. grin

http://www.yourdictionary.com/

Go to that page or any page on the main YD site and you’ll see a search box top of the pages. From there you can search all of YD for word defintions, articles and more.

OK, this and what Vikki says below:  I tried to do it at YD site:  I typed in sh??e and it came back saying: “Did you mean SHE??”
SO I am not doing something correctly.
