Hi,

I cannot find the meaning of “roll a merry eye” anywhere. Could you please help me?

[Sheeba, a cat, was facing up to Jim, a female dog; and the cat owner says:)

Jim rolled a merry eye and lolloped her tongue in our direction.

Does it mean that she looked happy or else playful or mischievous?

Thank you,
Ana

Jim [i.e. “a female dog”] rolled a merry eye and lolloped her tongue in our direction.

Conceited “eye rolling” gesture would indeed seem to bear distinct relevance in, besides marriage counselling and pediatric healthcare, broad-based cognitive linguistics according to vastly omniscient Wikipedia.org as follows:

Eye-rolling  Rotating the eyes upward generally signals condescension, contempt, boredom, or exasperation.  It can be interpreted as the equivalent of saying, ‘I don’t like this’ or ‘I think this is really stupid’ or ‘I simply can’t believe this.’”

But to roll a “merry” eye almost pokes derisive contempt at the central feline quadruped of such make-believe narrative.  Perhaps no less interesting, standardized dictionary entry lollop “to bob up & down” appears to derive from a lexical fusion or confusion of both protogeneous verb loll “to droop” and falsely onomotopoeic wallop “to thrash” when thereby joined together.

Announce a homework assignment to students, and watch the eyes roll.

Thank you.

So, should I interpret that the “roll a merry eye” movement in this sentence would correspond to something like “I can’t believe that such a good thing is happening to me?”

I suppose if fictional talking dogs could ever be sarcastic: “Now there’s a stinky, little cat in my otherwise dull to humdrum life—this must really be a brand new day after all!”

Aalvares, I think its more to do with body language.  Creatures in a predatory environment are nervous, cautious, and unable to relax.  Their eyes dart, constantly scanning, looking for that flicker of movement on the periphery of their vision that spells Danger!

Rolling a merry eye is only possible in a situation far from danger, where the dog is neither hunting nor hunted, and can afford a big, looping roll of happiness that signals the absence of predators, letting down your guard and the possibility of fun.
