hopping mad/got me mad

Hi,

I don’t understand the difference between these two expressions:

[after she describes some of the misbehaviours fo the cat, the owner says]

... all the more so when he discovered that it got me hopping mad.
It did make me mad, too.

I though that “get me hopping mad” and “make me mad” were equivalent expressions; but it seem this is not the case, so why would she write “too” at the end of the second sentence? Does it have something to do with the meaning of “hopping”?
