Legitimate only in certain defining context

Schoolmaster: “Let the record indicate I did exactly as became any responsible parent!”

Sorry, i don’t quite get the meaning of ‘I did exactly as became any responsible parent’...

does it mean ‘I did exactly just like any responsible parent does’?

More precisely, “I did exactly what any responsible parent would have done.”

The term, “becoming,” usually meaning “looking nice,” is a participial use of “become,” meaning roughy “to be what one should be.”
