Due to an unfortunate error, this category was deleted and all messages prior to January 19, 2003 have vanished into the ether.
We apologize to those of you who have expended considerable intellectual effort in this forum. We can only hope that your passion for discussing language has not dimmed.
Because of my other duties at the company, I did not originally realize what I had done when I deleted the history of this section. I was trying to simply remove the section on nominations for Top 10 Words of 2002 when I accidentally obliterated the entire category.
As the days past, the quality and importance of the Agora slowly dawned on me making my shame and need for absolution grow proportionately. So, this is, at long last, my confession and deepest apology for an act I should have been able to avoid.
As I’ve previously mentioned (in other threads), this place is special to me. While the past discussions were and are a treasure, the true gift is in the ability to meet and form friendships with those of similar inclinations… (weirdos like me!)

Agreed! Except about the wierdo comment - your contributions all seem very level-headed and treasurable.
I find wierdo too perjorative, but I agree the sentiment. As a child I wanted to be one of the great English eccentrics, but fortunately I moderated soemwhat.
Perhaps it might be appropriate to drop this thread’s "sticky" status? While it certainly was important at the time, and remains significant as part of the history of the Agora, it probably doesn’t need to still be fixed at the very top of this forum.
Personally, I’m all in favor of the ephemeral. I throw books away when I’ve read them. I delete files and emails like a Gjengis Khan. I dislike old photos. I appreciate the flowing river into whose waters you can never step twice.
