I haven’t seen this posted yet, and thought it too good a bit to miss.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys is available online now, in the form of a web-log (these days, called simply a blog), thanks to the efforts of Phil Gyford.

About the site:

This site is a presentation of the diaries of Samuel Pepys, the renowned 17th century diarist who lived in London, England (read more about him). A new entry written by Pepys will be published each day, with the first appearing on 1st January 2003. This site is run by Phil Gyford (who is far from an expert) and questions and comments are more than welcome at phil@gyford.com.

Unfortunately, I know very little of the man.  And I know even less of the English Civil War (such a sad and humorous combination of words).

Apparently, he did not keep his diary in common English but instead used a code called Shelton Shorthand, which Isaac Newton also used when writing.

There is an enlightening Historical Background on the weblog website.  Even more can be discerned using the likes of Google.

More useful information is available at The Montague Millennium.

Hey, Tim -

You might be interested to know that Claire Tomalin’s biography of Samuel Pepys was recently shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize.
