The star scheme is not unlike our hotel classification system that uses the same symbol. It measures quantity not quality, and yet there is a surprisingly good general correlation, and our numeric leaders have really earned their ‘stripes’.

From what I recall:
One star to start: neophyte
At 50 posts: logographer (and an extra star)
150 posts: logophile (and an extra star)
350 posts: logodaedalist (and an extra star)
500 posts: logomaniac (5 stars!)
Does that sound right?

Yes, but doesn’t it change one after those milestones? 51, 151, 351, 501?

It does change at 501 etc..

I’m not sure if I like the -maniac suffix though. I’ve a good mind to delete some postings.

I dunno about you, but I’M a maniac. The new title is merely an acknowledgement of the already existant truth.

It’s the idiotic association that concerns be. But you may be right. I calculate that 500 stars represents a thousand hours here. I’ve enjoyed that time, learned some valuable things, conversed with interesting people, but I’m not convinced that 5 gold stars and a -maniac tag are fair compensation wink Lately I’ve been finding it hard to devote the time needed.

Thank you.

I don’t want to give up - this is the second best site on the web - I’ll keep looking in, but may struggle to contribute so often.

One of the, in my opinion, unfortunate details of the counting system presently being used on our forum is that whenever one sends a new post, the number of that post is automatically assigned to all previous posts from the same participant. Wouldn’t it be easier to follow the development of a person’s thought if the posts were numbered in succession ?...

Henri, I have often thought along similar lines.  It seems that most of us change our little pictures and quotes often enough; at least they could stay with their original posts.

OC that wouldn’t work as a chronicle for those who don’t change their pictures and quotes.

Logomaniac means obsessed with words.  The original thread where suggestions were made was in General/Suggestions/Member Levels, which you can read to see the thought proccess we Agorans went through.  The list that finally made it was suggested by the inimitable, and lamentably missing, Grant Hutchison, in post number 24.  (This link starts with message 15, so you’ll have to scroll down to number 24)

Thank you Stargzer for locating that thread for us.

The recommendation of the good doctor is fine for me. But I wonder if (to my ear) the more euphonic Logothete made the list? Perhaps YaBB only has five levels?

Maybe, but you can follow their thoughts by the date of the post instead of the post count.

I imagine that storing the "current" post count with each post would require more storage (albeit not much if it was stored as a binary number instead of text, although I think Brad did say that the posts are stored as text files, ), which the YABB programmers apparently didn’t want to use.

Also, if one looked at earlier posts that had the "earlier" post count, one might not be able to tell which of the earlier posters continued to be an active participant.  Using the "current" post count shows which participants have the fortitude to stick with the Agora through thick and thin.

Personally, I’d like to see the older pictures and signatures kept, since they may give a better indication of the poster’s personality, but that would take up much more storage than is really necessary.

"These are my opinions; your mileage may vary."

So, Bryn—since no one else has asked—what’s the first best site on the web?! smile  C’mon, clue us in!!

Tamisaac, I wondered if anyone would bite at that particular morsel.

I allude to Yehudi Menuhin ("I play the violin exactly like him. Under my chin.")

When asked if he was the best in the world, he modestly admitted to being second best. To the inevitable next question he said, "I would not like to name them, they are all my friends".

One that’s important to me and others you might find interesting: FamilySearch will help you find your ancestors. The LDS Church devote much to the charitable effort of helping members and non-members to learn their family history. Even if you’ve not started on family history research, you may learn fascinating things about your origins.
