Recently I found an interesting album by a famous singer. And looking at liner notes I found Rauschweif, Krummhorn and Hirten Schalmei (herdsman’s schalmei—I don’t know if English spells it like this). Those are all antique folk music instruments, but Google wasn’t much helpful.

Does anyone have some information or, maybe, a photo?  ;D Especially of the Rauschweif.

Her name wont be of help to you. I tried to find "Rauschwife" but to no avail (as Tim always says).

P.S. I’ve sent you an IM and look at the seraphic post on Suggest…  :)

All 3 are medieval double-reed instruments recently popular in the society for creative anachonism.  They tend to sound like kazoos to me.

Krummhorn (also called crumhorm or krumphorn)
Rauschpfeifes (also called Rauschweif)
Shawms (also called schalmei) - I don’t know what specific form the herdsman’s take, but I suspect it would be close to one of the forms given at this site

The Antique Sound Workshop catalogue has pictures of them all

Hope this helps

It would be so nice to have audio-samples of these instruments. I’ll try to find them on the net.
