What are synonyms for "military force" and "military oppression" besides "flak" and "sabre"?

Ok, I’ll bite. Besides flak and sabre? I hadn’t heard of those in this context before. I had heard of rattling the sabre which doesn’t really help. What is the context in which you want to use military force or military opression?

The context-as a form of defense or oppression., whether physical or metaphorical/figurative.
