A proposal for convenience

Here’s a thing that irks me.  Ever since this site changed their dictionary format, users sometimes go through unnecessary pages after searching for a word with only one result.  I know some programming thing could be installed in the web page’s code to go directly to the definition instead of first going to an intermediary page and making an extra click.  This is especially true for words with only a single match.  Maybe you could fix the problem and save thousands of seconds and extra clicks worldwide.  :)

Oh yeah, and how about putting one of them word-search thingies on the WOTD page in addition to the home page.  I make the WOTD page my browser’s home page in order to have a convenient way of learning new words before surfing the web.  However, if I want to search for my own words, I have to make one extra click to get to the main page.  It’d be great if the search feature was on the WOTD page also. smile

How about one of them search thingies on every page of the website?  I realize this may be difficult, but the English-dictionary word searcher is probably the most popular thing here, and it’d be great if it was ubiquitously available.

I’m hoping to find time soon to create templates for most of the pages and I like the idea of having the lookup on each page.

As for the inconvenience of the current dictionary lookup, it’s something we’re working on.  Our contract with Merriam-Webster expired before we had a chance to program all of the necessary features into the new American Heritage dictionary.  So we’re playing a bit of catch-up.  I’m hoping it all gets straightened out in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the ideas.

Try installing the lookup tool from the first page of yDc into your browser.  Then you’ll be able to highlight word at ANY site and look it up at yDc.  Just click on the text below "Lookup Button" at the bottom left of the page and follow the directions.  Works like a champ!

(Note to Brad:  "Lookup Button" is linked to the FAQ.  Your coders may need more caffeine!)
