Welcome to yourDictionary’s Agora, the new webspot for the meeting of minds fascinated with the whims and fancies of words.  Since founding A Web of On-line Dictionaries in 1995, I have responded to more than 20,000 of your e-mail messages.  The more I have talked with you, the more I understood how much those of you who have written have in common.  This forum, this Agora, was designed as a place to develop those common interests.

We hope those of you who have visited our website over the past 2—or 7—years enjoy meeting each other. I am convinced you will.  Please come often to either speak your mind about language or listen to the rest of us speak ours.  Take a look at the rules of the game so that you understand that only civil communication will be allowed here.  This will be a place to practice and hone your language skills while learning more about the language you and others speak, whatever that language might be.

We will have special guests discussing special topics at Agora from time to time.  Dr. Language, Dr. Himes, and others at yourDictionary will always be around. However, we anticipate you will create your own fun here by simply sharing your own knowledge and insight about your language or your dialect.

Thank you for your support over the years.  Please enjoy the Agora for many more to come.

I just wanted to chime in with Dr. Beard and also welcome you to the Agora.  As a web developer I have set up and administered several other discussion boards.  I find them to be one of the best aspects of the internet.  For me they are where community is really built on the net.  So I’m hoping that this new feature will help yourDictionary become not merely a resource for language but also a community of language lovers.

The discussion board software that we use (YaBB) has many features to help you communicate with other members.  Please look around and take advantage of what we have to offer.  Click on the "help" button to get a mini-tutorial of some primary features of the board.  We will have a more detailed FAQ sometime soon.

And please feel free to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or send me an Instant Message through the Agora if you have any questions about features of the board or if you are having problems.

¡Guau! What a nice surprise to find this very promising agora! This software, YaBB, seems wonderful! And this just added to your very useful earlier services! (One only wonders who/what pays for all this?!?) smile

Well, soon you can help.  The next project we’re working on is a web store with yourDictionary mugs, t-shirts, canvas totes, books and more.

Hello, folks.  I’ve already been talking in topics with various readers, but I want to write here to officially welcome everyone to the Agora.

Welcome.

Already, this is proving to be one of the most exciting features at yourDictionary, thanks to all of you.  Let’s tell our nearest and dearest, our colleagues and correspondents about it and build an intellectual and interactive community like none other on the ‘net.

Best regards,
Audra.

The scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off comes to mind; the one where they’re trying to take milage off the car by running it in reverse on props. In the end, the whole thing goes wrong and the car shoots out of the back of the garage into a dingley dell…

It’s more like fastforward of cassettetapes.  If one deletes one’s post, miraculously somebody else gets his posts on the boards.  Adding the total of wound-up tape on both ends of the cassette, all ups and downs are evened out.

Slow day, on the Agora, found this thread, decided to resurrect it.  Looks like it was one of the first. Thought others currently using the Agora might like to see it.

It was dated 2002. I was just a sophomore student in a University at that time.

Now that’s interesting.  This had to be one of the firsts, just ran across it by accident as there was no activity on the site over the weekend, and I was just exploring around.
