I love this expression. It’s such a good way of describing near success.

Does anyone know where it comes from?

Is it the state motto of Florida?

Hello,
From "The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition.  2002.":
Close, but no cigar =
Even a near miss is still a miss. The saying probably originated with carnival contests in which a cigar was the prize for hitting a target.
Is it helpful? smile

No, that’s "Close enough - have the whole darn factory!"

Kasia is correct! (Give that woman a cigar!)

However, my non-smoking circle likes to render this as: Close, but no cigarette.

Way to go, Kasia!

You get the (bubble gum) cigar or the (candy) cigarettes!

This is very close to the motto of Irish pubs these days.

Open, but no cigarette.

Too many cigars and the atmosphere gets very close.
