I have been fascinated by riddles ever since I can remember; I think there is a wildly interesting relationship between a riddle’s vocabulary, content, objective and subjective meanings, points of reference, context, etc. and its geographic and cultural origin, first usage, etc. which bespeaks that the way different peoples search for meaning in life and answers to the most fundamental questions of existence is influenced to an enormous degree by language.

What stays in the corner and travels all around the world?

Ouais, c’est bien dégueulasse.

What corner?

Northwest, usually. Had to think about that one ...
Too bad riddles have fallen out of favor, I think the Irish were especially known for them, as well as poetry.

Good job answering it without divulging the answer.

I didn’t know if I should post this or not but Northwest really confused me!  You must have been facing West when you looked at it, melissa.  I was facing North, so for me it was the Northeast.

Yes, what’s green, hangs on the wall and whistles. Northeast is an answer, too. but too easy. Most riddles have more than one answer.

Hi Bellator,
I think that close to what you were saying is the limiting influence language has on thought. I wonder how many of us think in words, either knowingly or not. Does language limit our conceptualizing to things that we can verbalize or explain?
