what is "cast in kipling’s belching"?

Hey, Agora!
I need your help. I’m  translating "An Aspidistra in Babylon" by H.E. Bates. And I don’t quite make out what the author meant by saying the following:
"They (*soldiers of 1921 *my remarque) were cast in Kipling’s belching, bawdy mould.

maybe they kept fit by doing burpees, otherwise the scholars will have their say.
