i need some help.  i want an eptithet that is not a curseword, but still conveys the same contempt.

"jerk" just isn’t cutting it.

If you’re willing to risk it a little, you could go with jackass. Not a polite word, but not quite profane.

i considered that possibility…

jackass has more of a "stupid" connotation

while a—hole implies "meanness"

despicable—more of an objective connotation: "worthy of being despised" as opposed to just feeling like the person’s actions are mean

I had a neighbor, very polite English professor, that used the phrase "horse’s ass" to describe one of our not so polite neighbors. To me it has the same connotation as jackass, but sounds nicer.

How about getting technical with either rectum, anus,  or sphincter then? Personally I llike sphincter.
