This may not be the place for my question, but I would not be surprised if I get a reply here anyway! I saw it recently, but WHERE!!! Who said (approximately): "By learning a new language you acquire another soul."??¿  (It’s great, huh?)

Perhaps it appears in one of the member profiles or signatures… you might try browsing there.  :)

Thanks for comments!
Beleive it or not. I just tossed in a couple of the key words in Altavista Search and ended up with http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/russian/study.html - who uses it in the main head of its home page! "To know another language is to possess another soul"! And I sent my question to the webmaster. Let’s see..
Don’t you agree it’s such a wonderful concept it would do just fine somewhere in ‘yourdictionary.com’!? smile

I found it by searching keywords at Google:

"To have another language is to possess a second soul."  Charlemagne

Cheers! ;D

Ironic, that.  Robert Beard, the person at Bucknell Russian who uses that quotation as the main head of his page there is…wait for it…yourDictionary.com’s own Dr. Language!

Best,
Audra.

So it comes full circle  :)

In my good ol’ high school’s Spanish Honor Society, the induction ceremony included the reciting of the line, "El que habla dos linguas vale por dos."

No habla español sans un dictionnaire!   :D

Is it:
"He that speaks two languages is worth twice as much."?

Yes, your translation is close enough. A bit over the top, so I prefer Charlemagne’s phrase.

No hablas espanol sin diccionario? Que lastima.

I wouldn’t call it more over the top than gaining another soul. Has anyone consulted the Almighty on this matter? smile
