finagle: fuh-NAY-gul or fuh-NEE-gul

Yesterday, while checking the spelling of finagle, I realized that I had mispronouncing it all my life.  The dictionary says it’s fuh-NAY-gul and I’ve always heard and said fuh-NEE-gul myself.  

Now the question is:  Am I an oddball?  Does anybody else here say it the way I do?  Can’t anyone find a dictionary that countenances my pronunciation?   smile I really wouldn’t like to change it, but I guess I would be obliged, at least when I’m teaching, to say the ugly fuh-NAY-gul instead of the mellifluous fuh-NEE-gul.

Always heard it pronounced fih-NAY-gle.

Where’d you get the idea that the second syllable would be ‘ee’?

Who knows?  I think I learned that word from my host family, back in 1997, so their mispronunciation must have rubbed off on me.

What do I know?  I just realized now that a word that I’ve pronounced as hipalage all my life is actually pronounced hipálage. :-[  (But I do think I’ve always read without an accent mark, which has doubtless misled me.)

the translation I got for this was:

Rhetorical figure that consists of attributing to a complement to another different word to which it had to correspond logically.

and try as I might, I can’t actually figure out what it’s trying to say.

what would the equivalent term be in English?

is the only pronunciation I know.

hipalage

on the other hand, I don’t know a word in English that corresponds. But it means ascribing a quality to a part when it should properly refer to the whole. (I think.) Anyone know an English word for this?

I’ve always said fuh-NAY-gle, but i’ve also heard, albeight rarely, fu- NA-gle with a short a…anyone else?
