Except that it is a shortening of facsimile,  the device used for sending them and facsimile communication it has another, quite peculiar and obsolete meaning: it menas HAIR (appears in surnames such as Fairfax, names of horses - Shadowfax (‘white haired’)

I thought that facsimile came from "to make something similar" (Latin facere simile).

Yes, it comes from those two Latin words. But ‘fax’ that referrs to hair, comes from a quite different source.
