I think maybe ‘hep’ might have already been a word of the day.  Maybe.  I wonder about the etymology because of the difference between the two uses.  

Hep: hierosolyma est perdita
hep: in the know

How did each evolve and was/is there a relationship.

Fantastic query ! But even if the cats that first hit upon hep in the latter sense cared about the loss of Jerusalem, I somehow doubt that they realised that this fate—in Latin, no less !—was described by employing their term as an acronym….
