Crunch (n.)
A critical moment or situation, especially one that occurs because of a shortage of time or resources: a year-end crunch; an energy crunch.
[Alteration of craunch, possibly of imitative origin.]
There’s also an Internet address crunch as it has become apparent that 2[sup]32[/sup] (i.e. 4 billion) addresses is inadequate in the face of the exponentially explosive growth of the internet.
It’s also interesting that this noun form has been adjectivied ?? as "crunch time".
