From the ETYMONLINE:
room - O.E. rum, from P.Gmc. *ruman. Originally "space" (a sense preserved in make room), meaning "chamber, cabin" first recorded 1312 as a nautical term, and first applied 1457 to chambers within houses. The O.E. word for this was cofa, ancestor of cove. Roommate is 1838, Amer.Eng.; roomy is from 1627.
Nothing special about this word, except that it made me dissappear for so long. I was told by our excrescent landlord to hit the road as he got tired of those querulous foreigners, and it took me almost three weeks to find something that had a semblance of human quarters (for instance, I was offered a windowless basement for 250 us$!!). Now I reside in the heart of the Taipei’s Shida night market (between Taiwan’s two major universities), which is very convenient, but noisy (esp. a group of hellraising cats which seem to mistaken the warm weather for spring and the activities related to it)
Well, after moving I thought I could settle down (mentally, that is), but that’s when everyone’s sneezing finally got to me and took me down. Now I consume huge amounts of tea, honey and whiskey, trying to convince myself I’m getting the upper hand against the microbs.
resettled norio :P
