Canossa
(kə-nŏsˈə, kä-nōsˈsä)
A village of north-central Italy in the Apennines. In January 1077 the Holy Roman emperor Henry IV did penance in the castle here to obtain a pardon from his excommunication by Pope Gregory VII.
