universal product code (UPC) definition - business

universal product code (UPC)

A unique 12-digit number assigned to merchandise. The first 6 digits identify the vendor and the next 5 digits identify the product. The last digit, called a check digit, verifies the UPC has been read correctly. A product's UPC is typically placed next to a computer-readable bar code. See also check digit.
