total disability
The physical or mental inability to perform the essential duties of the person's regular occupation or a similar occupation for which the person is generally qualified. The definition of total disability can vary and is very important in attempting to qualify for disability benefits from an insurance company. Social Security tends to use a strict definition of disability.
