stratified random sampling

A sampling procedure in which a population is separated into subgroups (strata) and then samples are selected from each subgroup. Stratified random sampling is used when homogeneous subgroups can be identified within a heterogeneous population. For example, the population of a geographic area is separated into subgroups based on age.
