split shift

A employee work schedule that includes two or more segments during each working day. For example, to handle peak customer activity during lunch and dinner, restaurant personnel often work split shifts. Similarly, university professors with night classes may work a split shift that involves teaching during mornings or afternoons and returning to work in the evening.
