Social Security tax

The federal tax paid by employers and employees on employee earned income. The tax levied on current employers and employees is used to pay for retirement, survivor, and disability benefits of current recipients. The employer is responsible for withholding the tax from employee paychecks and forwarding the funds to the government. Self-employed individuals are responsible for paying both parts of the tax.
